Early Mark Making

In Nursery we have weekly squiggle while you wiggle sessions that support gross and fine motor skills ready to hold pencils and pens for mark making.

We do large movements to music 'wiggling' before we 'squiggle' on paper with a range of mark making materials including crayons, felt tips and paints.

Check out these useful websites to support early mark making at home.

Motor Skills - Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle Part 1

Shonette and the Spread the Happiness Crew demonstrate the first three moves in the Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle teaching method for writing. The full book is available at spreadthehappiness.co.uk Linking to early writing Shonette and the Spread the Happiness Crew dance a simple routine to help with early writing patterns, which then is drawn by the children using a pen in each hand in order to build the neurological pathways needed to support children's early letter formation.
